Uni Veritas

"The very name of universities testifies to its Christian origin: Uni Veritas. One Truth. Atheists and evolutionists may establish aversities, diversities and poliversities, but universities belong to Christ." -- Peter Hammond, founder of Frontline Fellowship

Culture of debt followup #2

If I have my information correct, there are ways that school loans can be waived by serving in the Peace Corps.  Interesting, isn't it?  Kind of like blackmail.  First, you hook a person.  You find out something about them that only you can clear, and you hold that over them until they do what they wish.  At the point where the government gives special ways of waiving school debt, and students are convinced they must have higher degrees, we'll have an interesting situation, now won't we?  On the face it won't be compulsory, but if the only realistic way to pay off gargantuan student debt is to serve in a government-mandated capacity (military or Peace Corps), it is compulsory.

Culture of debt follow-up

And it's easy for people to trade off debtors.  We're used to owing private banks our school loans.  Does it make that much difference that pretty soon we'll be owing school loans to the federal government, because of the last-minute add-on to the healthcare bill?  Oh yeah, baby, yes.

Culture of debt = Culture of indemnitude

Quick question: isn't the massive debt accrued by attending college that many learn to shrug off putting us in a culture of indemnitude?  Med school is $125/year.  We're told it doesn't matter, we'll pay it off eventually.  But why do we have to face this kind of debt in the first place?  It seems to put us into a slave mentality at worst, or condition us to treat massive, unbridled national debt with little more than a shrug.  Ahh -- it'll get paid off eventually.  And even if it doesn't, well, it hasn't exactly hurt us yet anyway.  Right?

Re: Papers for Monday's GM

Thanks a lot, Zidong.
Everybody else -- you don't have to claim more of these papers that don't already have your name next to it.  I just wanted to remind you of what papers we'd all claimed or assigned to us that still needed to be presented.

Resurrection (Easter) Sunday

SYN "The Big Sleep is Over"

I went with Grandma, Grandpa, and my aunt and uncle to their Lutheran church for a sunrise service last Sunday.  We had a grand song service.  There were some songs I knew really well, and others that I kind of bumbled along with!  The preacher was racing from the back to the front of the church through the service.  He would lead the responses at the front, then jet to the back to play the trumpet or sing a solo!  Though, I didn't know 'til later that he was doing all three things!  Fortunately, he left the organ playing to someone else!

His sermon started with the Battle of Waterloo.  After the battle was over, the English sent a message back home that said "Wellington defeated."  The homies starting mourning the loss.  What they didn't know was that the weather had interrupted the full message, which was "Wellington defeated Napoleon."  Once the weather cleared up and full message came through, everybody (okay, so not the French) starting celebrating.  He compared that story to Jesus' story.  If you tuned in on Friday night, it'd be easy to get the message "Jesus defeated."  But come Sunday morning, the real story, "Jesus defeated Satan" comes through loud and clear!

Aphid Talk

Aphid #1: How does growing in segments help grapefruits survive evolutionarily?
Aphid #2: Long, long, ago the Grapefruit Fathers foretold a day when things called people walk the earth, and these people would want to eat their fruit in segments.
Aphid #1: So grow in segments so you can get eaten faster -- but cultivated beforehand.  That was forward thinking, my friend.
Aphid #2: Verily.

Why Academia?

It's a niggling question.  Why do people go into academia?  Here's one humanity prof's answer to that question.

Greek Celebrities

Have you ever noticed that the "high-brow" study of Greek deities is strikingly like the modern obsession with Hollywood celebrities?
